How FD maturity is calculated
Maturity = P × (1 + r ÷ n)n × t, where P is the deposit, r the yearly rate as a fraction, n the number of times interest is compounded each year and t the tenure in years. Most Indian banks compound FD interest quarterly.
Tax on FD interest
FD interest is added to your income and taxed at your slab rate. Banks deduct TDS if interest crosses a yearly limit (reported as ₹50,000 for most people and ₹1,00,000 for senior citizens from 1 April 2025). Check the current limit with your bank. If your income is below the taxable limit you can submit Form 15G or 15H.
Frequently asked questions
Which is better, cumulative or payout FD?
A cumulative FD reinvests the interest, so you get more at maturity. A payout FD pays interest monthly or quarterly for regular income.
Why is my bank’s maturity amount slightly different?
Banks may count days, round differently or use a different compounding schedule. Use the figure on your FD receipt.
