How the price of jewellery is worked out
Jewellery price = weight × rate for the purity + making charges + GST. GST is 3% on the value of the metal and 5% on making charges. 22-carat gold is 91.6% pure, 18-carat is 75%, and 24-carat is 99.9%.
About the indicative rate
The page converts the international gold or silver price (per troy ounce, 31.1035 grams) into rupees per gram and adds the import duty you set (the customs duty on gold was raised to 15% from 13 May 2026, according to press reports; check the current rate). Real shop rates also include local factors, so treat it as a guide only.
Tips when buying
- Insist on BIS hallmarked jewellery (look for the HUID number).
- Compare making charges between shops; they vary widely.
- Keep the bill; GST and purity details matter when you sell or exchange.
Frequently asked questions
Is this the live gold rate in my city?
No. It shows an indicative rate from the international price, not a city or jeweller rate. For today’s shop rate, ask your jeweller or check the IBJA website.
Why does 22K cost less than 24K?
22-carat gold is 91.6% pure gold mixed with other metals for strength, so it holds less gold per gram.
How much GST is charged on gold jewellery?
3% on the metal value and 5% on making charges, as per the rates generally applied; confirm on your bill.
